Is anyone here familiar with this classic children's tape/CD series? My kids just LOVE Psalty! I am not sure that Psalty is still available in christian bookstores as I heard that they got somewhat put on the "shelf" by VeggieTales. VeggieTales are humorous, but for meaty theological concepts, I much prefer Psalty. We particulary like the one about missions and missionaries, the camping adventure and Funtastic Family. Though they are all great.
My kids want to get a Psalty CD for a little girl whose birthday party we were invited to. She has just about every toy (parents are both lawyers), but the kids think giving her the blessing of Psalty would be a preferable gift to a toy.
I can find Psalty at www.Psalty.com, (http://www.Psalty.com,) but I want to know if I can pick one up quick at a christian bookstore. Does anyone know?

Cheryl, I had all but forgotten about good old Psalty... I proabally still have the cassette tapes somewhere. I should get them burned to a CD for my granddaughter ~ my kids loved him too.
Hmmm, now I'm going to have to clean out that closet, I suppose? :( :D

Oh my gosh, does that bring back memories! We did a "Psalty" musical at school when I was in fourth grade. The poor kids who had to dress up as Psalty and family -- their costumes were SO elaborate, and rumor had it that their makeup was some kind of stuff that was used to treat diaper rash, which of course gave a bunch of elementary-school kids great delight. :D
We did have a good time with that. Seems to me that Veggie Tales are more fun and less hokey, though.
Sorry I can't help you with this, but it was fun to remember that!

My goodnes Cheryl. Psalty is a big part of my salvation story and DS1's. We love Psalty in this house. Someday (when I get my real screen name back smile.gif ) I'll post a thread on how Psalty helped bring us to the Lord!

I thought that Psalty might ring a few bells with people. smile.gif ;) I am looking forward to hearing your story, Laura.
I have kind of a bad taste in my mouth with Veggie Tales, I'm afraid. They are funny (and less hokey, at least, until they become outdated) but so many of their jokes are geared for adults. For quite awhile, it was my dh and I that were laughing at the DVD's while my kids just sat there. They seem to have a more watered down message to appeal to the masses where Psalty sticks to the gospel message and doesn't apologize for that, IMO. I just like that better.
I actually talked to "Psalty" on the phone a few years ago because his website would not take my payment information. And at that time, he explained that why they were not as available in bookstores (which is why I had to put in a website order)was because the Veggie people were saying that if Psalty was available in the same bookstores as Veggie Tales, they would pull their (Veggie Tales) product. Therefore somewhat forcing the hand of these bookstores to no longer carry Psalty. He just mentioned this to explain why they were not as available. They were still in litigation at that time. My understanding from the conversation was the corporate Veggies were feeling a little threatened by the small family-owned Songbook. I have felt kind of bad about that ever since and would much prefer supporting Psalty than the clever Vegetables ever since.
So hokey or not, the concepts my kids are learning are "right on" (at least the ones I have heard) and speaking to their hearts. That is all I care about. So I say, GO PSALTY!! LOL! :D Though, I fear that they really have been forced out of the market. So I would encourage any and all that if you liked their product to support them.

Cheryl, have you ever heard of Judy Rogers. She is from Atlanta and she puts scripture to music for children. I love her music.

Oh my! I remember Psalty! We were in Japan - where we had NO access to any English music or books, or anything from the States. This was in the 80's and we didn't have computers with email! So we were very out of touch. ANYWAY, someone from a military base gave a cassette tape of Psalty and a book to our young daughter and she listened to it so much, we were ALL singing the songs by heart!
Good for you in your support of Psalty !

Oh, poor embattled Psalty!! I did like his songs much much better ~ but I must say that I do love the Veggie Tales too, they are a lot of fun, but you're right, Psalty is much more Scripture based.
I was just talking to my dd, she remember ole Psalty, I'm going to have to order some for li'l Sammy ~ they'll be coming to visit soon.

Oh does this bring back memories! When my kids were small Psalty came to do a huge show in our basketball arena. Psalty comes dashing out running all over the stage, back and forth, back and forth, then all of a sudden he stops and dizzily plops down on the stairs huffing and puffing and says, "Whew! Psalty's not used to high altitude!" Here in Albuquerque we live at a *very* high altitude and the air is rather thin, O2-wise. Folks from low altitude areas can get a little light headed if they exercise too intensely before they're used to it. I thought Psalty was going to pass out right then and there in front of thousands of children! I could just imagine this huge 'book' laying on his back, spread eagled on the floor with little kids crying "Mommy, what's wrong with Psalty?"

He was ok.

Beth, I have heard of Judy Rogers and we just love "Teach Me While My Heart Is Tender". My dd always loved the song about "Isabel, is a pig" Judy puts proverbs and biblical doctrinal concepts to music. We also have "Pilgrim's Praise" too. Wonderful! Highly recommend those too. My personal favorite goes like this:
(Chorus)Is there anyone who could ever do anything that He wanted to?
Yes, God can! God can do all his holy will.
God never changes, he remains the same.
He has a plan to glorify his name.
Man makes a plan but God directs his way.
He is working out his holy will each day!!
(Chorus)
We never need to worry or to fear.
God has control of all things far and near.
If we should stand or even if we fall,
God is working out his purpose in it all.
(Chorus)
I LOVE that one!! I should "sing" it to everyone going through trauma on this board, huh?! smile.gif I need to "sing" it to myself frequently enough!
LOL, Jeanne! I would have loved to see that! My kids were cracking up reading about that!
We are with Josephina. We love the camping adventure and refer to it frequently that we don't have to climb the mountain (or our do our schoolwork)all at once, but one step at a time! smile.gif
