I tried to post a new topic so we can start discussing "Shepherds Abiding," but it won't let me start a new one...can anyone else do it? Anyway, I'm about two-thirds through the book and enjoying it very much! I especially like the sub-plot involving Hope and Scott. Warning: the type is large, and there are lots of illustrations, so an eager reader can finish this in two or three evenings. So you may want to save it for the holidays (I thought it might take me weeks to read it, like some of the larger books).

I,too, dive into a new Karon book like a hungry wolf. I have to see what happens to who, (or is it "whom"?) Then I like to go back and reread it slowly, like sipping wine, to savor all the little nuggets of prose that are almost poetry. I reread to see if I think the characters act in a way that I thought they would, based on their actions and thoughts from the earlier books. It doesn't seem to matter if the book is a full sized one, or one of the "in-betweeners." This works for me.

I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your Mitford Series. I
bought a set for the church library and I also have a set to loan out to
friends and I keep a special set for myself.
I am now on my 5th reading of these precious books. I feel like I know
everyone in them and someone said to me "Do you feel you should send them a
birthday card?" I laughed but it is true they are so real I almost think
they are walking around the town even today. God bless you for a true
gospel message throughout they books that speak to each of us and the way
episodes are written you feel like you have been in the same situation as
the characters in the series.
I will look forward to another one in the years to come!!!! We must hear
how it turns out for Dooley etc.
God Bless Mabel Jennings Victoria B.C.

I got the book at Sam's yesterday and read it last night, finishing about 2am. I loved it. It was like going home again. I dearly love these characters and their lives. They are the people next door, people in our own families, and the people who run the diners and bookstores in our towns.
Jan Karon, you have done it again! Thank you.

I bought the book last night and am torn between finishing in quickly and taking my time and enjoying it. I read ITM so quickly that I had to reread it over the next week to really enjoy it. I have also enjoyed listening to the books on tape or CD as I travel-it's a whole new perspective to hear them. So far, I love this book as much as any other.

Heathera and others who just bought SHEPHERDS ABIDING,
I am like you, I want to savor the book. I can't rush through it. Jan Karon's sweet spirit shines through the pages as she offers us her creative characters and plot. And always, she writes to give God the glory. Jan, CONGRATULATIONS!

I just finished the book and I loved it. I think JK warned us about length and we should just treasure any additional Mitford books that come our way. I read the large print version, which I purchased for my mother, and unfortunately it came without illustrations so those of you who have the regular version with pix should consider yourselves lucky!!

I hate to burst your bubble, but Shepherds Abiding will not be out in paperback until next year. Paperbacks are always released a year after the hardcovers.
I read SA last week and am going to read it again. I don"t usually do this but I felt I missed something in the first reading after visiting this site and reading a lot of the comments made. It was very easy to read and I felt at the end as if I knew some of the characters personaly...I am going to find the rest of the series on Midford...and I love all the discussion on the web... Happy New Year to all sg.
