I am tired of seeing that "disappointed thread", so will pull this up every time I see it on the front.

You go girl! Excellent idea! VERY bad form and just downright ill-mannered to come here and talk about being disappointed in Jan's book on HER website.

Again, I agree 100% I can not imagine how it made Ms. Karon feel, if she saw it.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have to say that I just loved Shepherds Abiding. I received it for Christmas and read it the next day. It was a beautiful story and just really helped me focus on the meaning of Christmas. Lisa

I have been reading Jan Karon for some time, when I get the chance I will have to remember when and how I actually received In This Mountain which inspired me and I have every hard cover issue and am almost done with SA. I am trying SO hard to read slow, I have to savor every word as it will be a long time until 2005 when the last book is issued. I never read Jan with any intention to critize. How could it be possible? I had 2 year bout with anxiety and am seeing my way clear but only now. I lived off of Jan and she inspired me to see life as a human with stronger feelings and with faith I am becoming strong. Thank you to anyone reading this, I would drive a million miles to meet up with you in Mitford.

To all you Mitford enthusiasts...
Yay, Yay, Yay!

I've never read these message boards before today, but I've read every Mitford book and most of them more than once. You know why? Because I'm hard pressed to find any other books out there that affect me in the same wonderful way as do Jan Karon's. She's a jewel of an author and I am ever grateful for anything she writes, be it long or short, or even her shopping list. My general impression of popular fiction these days is less than favorable... how many times have I purchased a book that I thought would be a good read and then discovered it to truly be a horrible waste of my time and my twenty bucks? I know ahead of time that any Mitford book, even if it's just a book of quotations, will be thought provoking, enriching and delightful. For anyone who begrudges their purchase of SA I say be glad we can even buy books, much less ones that discuss God, life, love and religion, and then take yours to the used bookstore so I can buy it for someone who'd appreciate it!

My yea's and amens as well. There is so much awful in the world if we really want to spend time complaining and criticizing--let us encourage one another! I love the verse, "I thank my God for every remembrance of you" That is how I think of Jan Karon and of course all of you, her faithful readers. Blessings to all as I am visiting for 1 month here in my heart home of Maui.

Me again, not to belabor a subject, but I just went back and read all of the messages above mine and they are from all over the country as well as Canada--that in itself, the diversity of us all blessed me even further--Carolen

I've read it twice. It made the celebration of Christ's birth really special for me this year. How I appreciate Jan Karon and the gifts she has given us.

YES, SHEPHERDS ABIDING IS VERY GOOD!

Yes, like LuLu and many of you, I savored SHEPHERDS ABIDING. It's so special, it can be read any time during the year. I listen to Mitford novels on audio even after I read them. The characters come alive in another dimension. You can borrow these audio editions from the public library. I am listening to IN THIS MOUNTAIN now and love it!

So thankful Jan Karon's mother is doing better. Let's keep praying for Jan these days, too.

All the best,
Hiker

Totally agree - I love all of Jan Karon's books and Shepherds Abiding was a bonus, I guess, for most of us who had thought we'd have to wait AGES for more "Mitford". I waited until Advent to read it and tried hard to read it slowly (I devour books!). I considered it a very special Christmas gift from a favourite author smile.gif ! Many thanks to Jan Karon.

Leenora,

The comment I made was merely that...a comment. Jan Karon is an accomplished writer and being such, she is capable of taking a bit of criticism. I want you to know that I love her work, but Shepards Abiding was not my favorite. However, even with that said, it does not mean that I will not gobble up everything she writes in the future with great enthusiasm. She is a smart, warm, funny, and heart-felt writer and I admire her greatly. So I guess I just had to voice my opinion and stand up for my right to state my opinion. I strongly believe in everyone's right to free speech.

I loved SA, my only disappointment was that I read it too fast and the end came too quickly! I am very anxious to see how Dooley turns out, so keep 'em comin' Ms. Karon. :D

Beattlemama & Jan Karon & everyone else,

I echo what you wrote to Jan Karon, "Keep 'em coming!" We are pulling for you,Ms Karon, and know you may have lost a lot of writing time while you took care of your mother. You are such a self-giving person. God will give you the strength to catch up and to "write on"....rapidly.

Warmest wishes,
Hiker

Before anyone thinks I am being rude to Marchien, let me explain that I have already sent her a message that I am posting this on this thread instead of the other thread.

I agree with Patsy Lynn, we got exactly what Jan Karon said we were getting. I loved the book and the only dissapointment I had is the same dissapointment I have when I finish every Mitford book. I was sad that I had finished it and had to wait for the next one.
To me this was a very beautiful, inspiring book.

I agree also..loved Shepherds Abiding!!!!!!!
No disappointment here!

I think this is a wonderful message from Marchien and needs to be on this praise thread instead of the disappointed on. Pat

I must say that I was totally enthralled with Shepards Abiding. Not only is it one of of my favortie scenes in the Bible, I thought Hope's conversion of heart thoughtful and sincere. It only helps to renew my faith and my own continual conversion of heart. Ms. Karon captures the stuggle with humor and a light heart. A+!!

Love this book! Have it out to reread after Thanksgiving. It's an annual tradition of mine- to read this every Christmas as the beginning of my holiday spirit season.

I love Shepards Abiding. I have made it a part of my Christmas "traditions". I will read it the week before Christmas each year.

After reading Light From Heaven and learning that Uncle Billy died and Hope and Scott got married explains, to me anyway, why Jan focused on them in SA.

I just joined this BB today, because I love Jan Karon's books! I just finished reading "Shepherds Abiding" over the holidays, and was so blessed to see our dear author's talents glorifying God in every way. I don't know of another writer who has blended an interesting story, characters, and the Word of God in such a captivatingly creative manner. I was especially blessed to read Father Tim's gentle explanation of the gospel to Lew Boyd in this book.

Originally from southern California, I now live in British Colombia on Vancouver Island. I invite you, Ms. Karon, to visit me for tea whenever you are in Victoria! Is anyone here in Victoria?

Darn it Joyce! I came to the SA board because I'm avoiding any discussion of LFH, since I haven't read it yet! Now I know two things I didn't want to know....

 Trina

And yes, I love SA too! smile.gif

I read SA aloud to my husband in the two weeks before Christmas. He loved it too! I will give it as a gift next year to several friends.

I think SA is my favorite book in the series.
A favorite part is the visit to the tea room
by the turkey club.

It truly brings a sense of thought and feeling to what a gift should be. I think its a great gift book before Christmas, maybe at Thanksgiving to inspire before the season gets so hectic and out of control. I'm sure each one treasures those things that have shown thought and labor. I have all of the macaroni necklaces and clay pots that my children and now grand babies make so earnestly and present with such delight. They are the real treasure like the nativity and the angel.
