Christmas was coming, a time to be glad.
But Katie O'Grady was, oh, so sad.
She watched the snow fall as she shed a tear.
How would Santa find her this year?

They'd lived in the same house each December,
For as long as Katie could remember.
But this year everything had changed.
Katie's life had been rearranged.

They had moved from the city,
Where the lights shined so bright,
To a house in the country,
Where the stars shined at night.

Her mother came in and saw Katie's frown.
She smiled at her gently, as she sat down.
"Katie," she said, "What's making you sad?
Whatever it is, it couldn't be that bad."

"I don't know," Katie said to her mother,
"If Santa will find me and my little brother.
How will he know where he should leave,
The presents for us on Christmas Eve?"

"Oh, Katie," said Mother, "Don't you see?
Christmas is wherever you want it to be.
It's baking cookies and trimming the tree.
It's seeing old friends and family.

It's going to church and kneeling to pray,
Giving thanks for the baby born that day.
Each of these things is a little part
Of what puts Christmas in your heart."

Mother smiled, as she said, "Don't you fear.
Santa will be able to find you this year.
For on that very special day,
The glow in your heart will show him the way."

Katie laughed, "Mom, you made me feel better.
I think I'll go and write Santa a letter.
I'll tell him in this house he'll be able,
To find cookies and milk on the kitchen table."
