Default Cinnamon-scented pine cones?

I always love the smell of these in stores at Christmastime. I just can't make myself buy them with so many pine cones on the ground near my house. Has anyone ever made your own? I looked up a couple of ways online, one was to put cinnamon oil in a bag with pine cones and shake it, and the other was to paint it on the pinecones. How much is the oil? A bag of the pinecones is $4.

Anne, I have no clue but I was in a Fresh Market the other day and they had them in the entrance and they smelled really good. I couldn't get over the fragrance and how pleasant it was.

I finally broke down and bought a bag -- put them in a basket on top of the fridge. They smell great!

I LOVE those things! But I'm like you Anne. I have so many nice cones around the house, I just collected them and tried to make my own. But it doesn't smell quite as strong or nice as the store bought one. So sorry, I'm no help. I don't know what to do about it...

My local Jewel has them in the entry as you walk in the store. I've never bought any though, so I'm not sure how much they are here.

  • 20 pinecones
  • cinnamon-scented oil
Directions

Spread pine cones on foil-covered cookie sheet and cook at 250* for one hour. This will kill any critters that might be in there.

When cool place in a heavy plastic bag and sprinkle well with the Cinnamon Oil Scent. Seal tightly and let set for about four weeks.

Bambi to the rescue!! Thanks for that! I'm gonna do it! I was just using ground cinnamon.

I have bought those or the scented brooms in past years. One year, I made a Christmas wreath and put cinnamon sticks in the bow. We lived in an upstairs apartment at the time and had a stairwell with 4 apartment entrances. As soon as you came in the door, you could smell our Christmas wreath!

I'll have to look for cinnamon oil as I'd like to try doing this on my own.

Thanks for your input, and especially for the "recipe", Bambi! I checked out the cinnamon scented oil at Wal-Mart and it was $1.97, and they only had cinnamon/nutmeg or apple/cinnamon. At half the price of a bag of already scented pinecones, now I'm thinking I may take the easy way out and just buy the bag
