Question Childrens Book Question

I am taking a class this term on Children's Literature. I have to read as many childrens books as possible in the next 8 weeks- all grade levels (bummer- I HAVE to read kids books for school ).
Anyway, what have you and yours liked? Disliked? All ideas appreciated!

Thanks all!

My dil teaches 7th grade English and has a masters in library science. I'll ask her and she can give you a really good list. She and I talk children's books all the time. I'll get back with you.

The Secret Garden comes to mind of one I WANT to read but haven't as of yet!

Even though it is HIGHLY controversial, I HAVE read the "Harry Potter" series and I enjoyed them, though I DO have issue with certain aspects of the boioks and no, my children (if I had any) would not read them.

All time favorites would be:

1) A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh)

and-

2) Beatrice Potter (all her books!)

My boys really enjoyed the Henty books....historical fiction written for older elementary and up, by G. A. Henty.

Going further back, anything by Beverly Cleary.

If you check the Sonlight curriculum site you will see a lot of great recommendations for living books. My children read a lot of these, even though we did a different curriculum for school.

Oh... I could go on and on for this one. Let me see if I can get a list together for you.

I am so sorry, I just typed a list of about 100 books, off the top of my head that my children and grandson just loved. Mostly preschool and elementary, but a few older, and the page went away. I just don't have it in me to do it again. Be sure to put Miss Fannie's Hat on your list!

I suggest a book called "Honey for a Child's Heart" for lists of books for children that children love, parents love and have good morals. I have never gone wrong with Gladys Hunt's list.

If I have a choice between illustrators, I prefer the more beautiful, more real, more old timey over the modern and cartoonish any day. Makes all the difference to me.

Here is another site that I trust their selections - AmblesideOnline.org. Just scroll down a little on each page for "Literature."
Preschool/K, First, Second, Third, Third.5, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Pre-Seventh, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh.

Some of my favorite collections are from Wm. Bennett's Book of Virtues.
E.D. Hirsch, Jr's The Core Knowledge Series has "What Your _____ Grader Needs to Know" Series with good literature for each grade.
A Treasury of Children's Literature (published by Ariel Books and eddited by Armand Eisen) This book as the most beautiful illustrations.
The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury selected by Janet Schulman.

Well, I hope this helps. I wish I felt like racking my brain again, but I don't.

My current newer favorite picture books are the "Pigeon" books by Mo Willems! They have the simplest of illustrations and kids (and I) ADORE them! And they are a HOOT to real out loud to a group. (Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late, Pigeon Wants a Puppy)

I know I'm jumping around, reading level wise, but a couple of my favorite chapter books for 4th-8th graders are Running Out of Time by Haddix (ANYTHING by Haddix), Hurt Go Happy by Ginny Rorby, Summer of My German Soldier by Greene, True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, The Cay by Theodore Taylor, and The Giver by Lowry.

The "Baby Duck" books by Hest are great to read to Kinders.

I could go on for hours, but I've got to go right now! I'll come back and list some more!

Donna
